There are holes in the underside of the beams, sawdust on the concrete, and a large black insect hovering near the rafter tails. The bird theory is understandable, and it is usually backwards. Woodpeckers show up second, drilling into the wood to eat the larvae a carpenter bee already put there. Getting the sequence right changes what you treat and when.
How do I tell carpenter bee damage from woodpecker damage?
Carpenter bees leave a nearly perfect circle about half an inch across, roughly the diameter of a pencil eraser or a little larger, drilled straight into the wood and then turning at a sharp angle to follow the grain. Woodpecker damage is irregular, oval or ragged, often a series of openings, and it tends to tear along a tunnel rather than punch a single clean entry.
Other tells that separate the two:
- Coarse sawdust, called frass, in a small cone below the hole, which is the bee excavating
- A yellowish or brownish stain streaking down from the entrance, which is waste from inside the gallery
- A large bee, three quarters to one inch, with a shiny black hairless abdomen, hovering and returning to the same spot. Bumble bees look similar but have a fuzzy yellow abdomen and nest in the ground
- Audible chewing inside the beam on a quiet evening
If you have both, the carpenter bee came first. Woodpeckers open the galleries to reach the larvae, and that secondary damage is often larger and more expensive than the original tunnel.
What wood do they target, and how bad does the damage get?
Carpenter bees prefer soft, unpainted, weathered wood, and in Southern California the recurring targets are redwood and cedar patio covers, exposed rafter tails, fascia boards, wood pergolas, deck railings, wood fence caps, and the underside of eaves where the finish has worn.
A single female drills an entrance tunnel about an inch deep, then turns and runs a gallery along the grain, commonly four to six inches, sometimes longer. On its own, that is minor. The problem is reuse. Females frequently return to existing galleries in following seasons and extend them, and University of California IPM references note that galleries can be lengthened substantially over successive years, which is how a rafter ends up with a foot or more of hollowed interior and how one hole becomes a cluster of six on the same beam.
Structural failure from carpenter bees alone is uncommon in a properly sized beam. Weakened fascia that will not hold a gutter fastener, split rafter tails, and cosmetic ruin on a redwood patio cover are the practical outcomes.
When are carpenter bees active in Lake Elsinore?
The valley bee, the common carpenter bee in inland Riverside County, becomes visibly active in early spring, generally March through May, when overwintering adults emerge and females begin excavating and provisioning galleries. That spring window is when you see the hovering and hear the drilling.
Larvae develop through late spring and summer inside the galleries. New adults emerge in mid to late summer, feed, and then return to tunnels to overwinter. Activity drops off through fall and the bees are largely inside the wood by late fall and winter.
That timeline is why the treatment calendar matters. Spring is when you catch females before eggs are laid. Late summer and fall is when you seal galleries with the fewest live insects inside. Sealing a hole in April with a developing brood behind it usually produces a new exit hole a few inches away.
Are they dangerous, and should I just leave them alone?
Males cannot sting at all. Males are the ones that hover aggressively near people, which is territorial bluffing with no stinger behind it. Females can sting but rarely do unless handled.
Carpenter bees are also legitimate native pollinators, and they buzz-pollinate crops that honey bees handle poorly. On a fence post at the back of a half-acre lot, leaving them is a reasonable choice. On the beams holding up a patio cover, or in fascia carrying a gutter run, the calculation is different, and treating the specific galleries threatening the structure while leaving outlying nesting sites alone is a defensible middle path.

Sealing the hole first is the mistake almost everyone makes. Caulk over an active gallery and the insect chews a new exit, or the brood matures behind the plug and emerges elsewhere. The order of operations is what makes the job hold.
A workable sequence looks like this:
- Inspect the full run of patio cover, fascia, eaves, railings, and fence caps and mark every hole, noting which show fresh frass
- Apply a labeled insecticidal dust directly into each gallery, since dust reaches the length of the tunnel where a surface spray does not
- Leave the openings open for several days so returning adults contact the material
- Plug the galleries with wood filler, a wood dowel and glue, or steel wool followed by filler
- Sand and paint or seal the repaired area, because paint is the durable deterrent
- Re-inspect the following spring, since existing galleries are the first place new females look
For prevention, painted or primed surfaces are far less attractive than bare wood, and an oil-based or exterior paint film outperforms a clear stain. Where appearance allows, replacing chronically infested fascia or rafter tails with primed and painted material, or aluminum-wrapped fascia, ends the cycle. Keep an eye on the shaded underside of beams, since that is where the finish wears first and where most holes appear.
Carpenter bee damage is slow, seasonal, and very repairable if you catch it in the first year or two, and mistaking it for woodpecker work costs people a season.
